Last Tuesday, we watched the second episode of My So-Called Life, which is in part about kissing. At the start of the episode, Angela recalls her kisses so far. They’re pretty paltry: a boy who kissed her for a bet, a guy with a girlfriend, and a lifeguard. Who was giving her mouth-to-mouth. (“I would totally have counted that!” Keris said.) Then, of course, Angela has her longed-for first kiss with Jordan Catalano… and it’s not how she imagined it would be. Like, at all.
After the show, I summarised my first kiss experience (“I was 14. At a bus stop. He was too good-looking for me.”) and asked people on Twitter, MSCL watchers or non-, to share theirs. There’s something about the 140 character constraints of Twitter that turns even the most prosaic experience into something… almost poetic, don’t you think?
@postteen: Thirteen. At a reserve, under shrubbery. Drunk on coffee marsalis. He had bad skin and a probing tongue.
@emmamcneil: Up against a windmill at my cousin’s 21st.
@laurenrobyn: We were 14. He played Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls on repeat to ‘set the mood’. I gave in to make it stop.
@Keris: In an alley, near my house. He smelled like Swizzles. But he *must* have been too old for Swizzles.
@feelinglistless: My first kiss was with someone *I* didn’t meet again. It was at a friend’s student union one night. It lasted about 10 secs.
@amyronge Mine was at a nappy night in a club, when I was 13. I had braces. He had braces. It wasn’t pretty.
@katbrown82 After getting off the Vampire ride at a Chessington Fright Night. LITERAL getting off there, *arf*
OK, I said almost poetic.
