Stuart (@feelinglistless) declared this the ep where MSCL gained classic status. And I agree — it’s pretty much perfect. It really nails teen self-obsession, obsession with appearance, and how no-one is ever happy with how they look 100% of the time. With the possible exception of RuPaul.
@Keris was on holiday, @JuniperJungle had nowhere to watch it, @novelicious was MIA and @Petronella had fallen behind. But @feelinglistless, @susieday, @cloverness and I soldiered on. Here’s the highlights:
@mssusieday That teacher’s soul patch is infinitely more horrid than her zit.
@dianeshipley Angela’s definition of Kafkaesque is brilliant
@feelinglistless Isn’t this the first scene in which Sharon has narrative agency, where it’s about her story not Angela’s?
@dianeshipley “You blend in.” WORST thing you can say to a teenage girl.
@feelinglistless I watched Drew Barrymore’s Whip It this morning. It’s essentially MSCL with rollerskates.
@dianeshipley But with a sub-par Jordan Catalano.
@feelinglistless Agreed.
@cloverness What is Angela wearing with the shorts over her leggings? Tights?
@mssusieday Did anyone’s school have these kind of polls? I won Cradlesnatcher of the Year. Almost as good as Most Slut Potential, no?
@dianeshipley We had a very amateurish yearbook when I left secondary school at 16. I blended in.
@feelinglistless “We don’t hear very much. We live in the back.” Ha!
@cloverness Oh hell, I’ll never get that cheerleader song out of my head.
@dianeshipley One of my fave quotes! “Just the word: SWAB.
@cloverness Brian and Rickie in this episode are fantastic.
@mssusieday Do mother/daughter fashion shows actually exist outside of heartwarming American family drama?
@mssusieday *sniffles* The scene where she says she’s ugly just kills me dead. ‘Like you’re trying to fix me’.
@cloverness That scene just made me cry.
@mssusieday The Brian/Rickie/Jordan homework club is a thing of beauty. ‘That Metamorphosis story: it’s made-up, right?’
@wendy_mc Right this moment, an episode of “My So-Called Life” is airing in the UK. And people are live-tweeting it. And I am jealous.
@beccasara @wendy_mc I have the entire series on DVD. and when i’m sick in bed i still pull it out to watch it. sigh. jordan catalano.
@mssusieday ‘I was so careful not to feel stuck-up, or vain. Or confident…I just wish I had been able to enjoy it.’ *sobs*
@wendy_mc Ahah! You clever Brits! RT @dianeshipley It’s not airing, we all synced our DVDs. ;)
@feelinglistless Return to Innocence always kills me. Wow, I’m weeping. [I was too.]
@cloverness Loved that episode. It still feels relevant in my life today.
Oof.
Same time next week (1 PM BST, Twitter hashtag: #MSCLRW) for episode 6: The Substitute. (Bring a toothpick.)
Until then, remember that: “When you really look closely, people are so strange and complicated that they’re actually… beautiful.”
Possibly even you.
